Oil for a Supercharged Toyota Engine

A supercharged Toyota uses two different oils, and they get confused: the engine oil in the sump, and the oil sealed inside the supercharger's own gear case. The gear case is a separate sealed fill that, per Magnuson, typically needs no routine change. For the engine, Magnuson tells owners to use quality oil and keep up regular engine oil changes. It does not publish a different viscosity or a shorter interval, and neither will we invent one. Start from the grade and capacity listed for your exact engine and year, then confirm anything different with the installer who calibrated your truck.

What we do not claim

You will see owners on public forums say they moved to a heavier grade or shortened their interval after installing a supercharger. Those are individual reports. They are not a Magnuson or Toyota recommendation and we do not present them as one. Heat, towing and driving style change what a sensible interval is, so ask the installer who calibrated your truck.

Supercharged engine oil FAQ

Magnuson's FAQ says to "use quality oil" and keep up regular engine oil changes, and it does not publish a different viscosity or interval for the engine. The starting point is the grade and capacity for your exact engine and model year, which the AMSOIL Garage confirms by vehicle. If your installer or Magnuson specifies something different for your kit, follow that.

Magnuson's FAQ says its superchargers come pre-filled with a sealed high-temperature synthetic oil in the gear case, that there is typically no need for routine supercharger oil changes, and that it recommends inspecting for leaks and checking the oil level at very high mileage.

Magnuson's FAQ does not publish a shorter interval. Some owners on public forums report switching to a heavier grade or changing oil sooner after installing a supercharger. Those are individual reports, not a manufacturer recommendation, and we do not treat them as one. Ask the installer who calibrated your truck, and base the interval on how you drive and tow.

Magnuson's FAQ says to use the recommended premium fuel, because running lower-octane gas can cause knock, and calls that an engine care item.
