Quick safety check before you begin. Required: safety glasses, gloves, and the vehicle level on a lift or on jack stands with the wheels chocked. Recommended: a drain pan, a torque wrench and a fluid pump — all three of these fills go in from underneath, through the filler hole. Toyota's own notice on the differentials: excessively large or small quantities of oil may cause problems. Its notice on the transfer case: too much or too little oil will lead to transfer problems.

Before anything comes apart, decide whether the service is called for. On the normal schedule the differential entry reads: inspect front and rear differential oil level, condition and check for signs of leakage, at mileage interval or every 18 months. The transfer case entry sits under the same Inspect heading, at mileage interval or every 36 months. Those two entries are unchanged at 90,000 miles, and the Replace list on that page is engine oil, the engine oil filter, the keyless entry transmitter battery, the cabin air filter, brake fluid and the air filter element — neither driveline fluid is on it. On the severe schedule at 30,000 miles both fluids do appear under Replace, but conditionally: the transfer case is "Replace if driving off-road, on dirt or dusty roads, or while towing. Otherwise, inspect," and the differentials are "Replace front and rear differential oil if driving while towing. Otherwise, inspect." If you tow, run dirt or dust, or wheel it, the severe column is yours. If you commute on pavement, Toyota's own answer at every interval it prints is inspect.
Toyota's first instruction for the differential oil procedure is to stop the vehicle on a level surface, and the transfer case level check depends on the same thing. Put it on a lift, or on jack stands with the wheels chocked, and keep it level side to side and front to back. You are working three separate units — front differential, rear differential and transfer case — each with its own filler plug, its own drain plug and its own gasket. Every plug you remove goes back with a NEW gasket; the manual says so at every step, not only when a gasket looks bad.
Remove the differential filler plug and gasket, then the drain plug and gasket, and drain the oil. The fluid is Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL5 or equivalent and the front carrier holds 1.48 qt (1.40L). Install a new gasket and the front differential drain plug at 65 N·m (48 ft-lb). Refill through the filler hole until the oil level is within 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.197 in.) of the bottom of the filler plug opening, then install a new gasket and the filler plug at 39 N·m (29 ft-lb). The two plugs on this one unit take different torques — 48 ft-lb on the drain, 29 ft-lb on the filler — so do not set the wrench once and work through the vehicle.
The rear carrier takes exactly the same Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL5 or equivalent, but 2.85 qt (2.70L), nearly double the front. Drain it the same way and install a new gasket and the rear differential drain plug at 49 N·m (36 ft-lb). Fill to the same level — within 0 to 5 mm of the bottom of the filler plug opening — and install a new gasket and the rear filler plug, also at 49 N·m (36 ft-lb). On this carrier the filler and drain figures match each other, and neither matches the front.
Remove the filler plug and gasket FIRST. If the drain comes out first and the filler will not, you have an empty case and no way to fill it. Then remove the drain plug and gasket and drain the transfer oil. Install a new gasket and the drain plug at 37 N·m (27 ft-lb). The refill is Toyota Genuine Transfer Gear Oil LF, viscosity SAE 75W — gear oil, not ATF, and not the 75W-85 that went into the differentials. Capacity is 1.5 qt (1.4L). For contrast, the automatic transmission on this vehicle takes Toyota genuine ATF WS; that is a different unit with a different fluid, and confusing the two is the easiest mistake to make on this job.
The transfer case is the fussy one. Add oil so that the oil level is between 0 to 5.0 mm (0 to 0.196 in.) from the bottom lip of the filler plug hole, and Toyota's notice is explicit about how: add oil slowly, and add oil a little at a time, waiting several minutes between each addition of oil. Then wait approximately 5 minutes and check that the oil level has not changed. Install a new gasket to the filler plug and tighten it to 37 N·m (27 ft-lb). On both differentials, check that the oil level is within 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.197 in.) of the bottom of the filler plug opening; the manual warns that excessively large or small quantities of oil may cause problems. Finally, drive the vehicle and check the oil level again, and add differential oil if necessary.

On the normal maintenance schedule both differentials and the transfer case are listed under Inspect — at 15,000, 30,000 and still at 90,000 miles — and neither fluid appears under Replace at any of those intervals. Replacement shows up only on the severe schedule at 30,000 miles, and even there it is conditional: "Replace if driving off-road, on dirt or dusty roads, or while towing. Otherwise, inspect" for the transfer case, and "Replace front and rear differential oil if driving while towing. Otherwise, inspect" for the differentials. If you tow a trailer, run dirt or dusty roads, or wheel the truck, the replacement is on Toyota's own schedule. If you do not, the schedule asks for an inspection.
Toyota Genuine Transfer Gear Oil LF, viscosity SAE 75W. That is a gear oil, not ATF — the automatic transmission on this vehicle takes Toyota genuine ATF WS, which is a different unit and a different fluid. Capacity is 1.5 qt (1.4L). AMSOIL publishes no recommendation for this position, which is why we tell you to buy the Toyota fluid or a genuine SAE 75W GL-4 equivalent rather than selling you the closest thing on our shelf.
The fluid is the same — Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL5 or equivalent in both. The capacity and the torques are not. The front carrier holds 1.48 qt (1.40L), its filler plug is 39 N·m (29 ft-lb) and its drain plug is 65 N·m (48 ft-lb). The rear holds 2.85 qt (2.70L) and both of its plugs are 49 N·m (36 ft-lb). That is three different torque figures across two axles, plus a fourth for the transfer case.
Five quarts. The front takes 1.48 US quarts and the rear takes 2.85, which is 4.33 together, so five quarts covers both carriers with a little left for topping up.
The repair manual gives one fluid specification for both differentials — Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL5 or equivalent — and prints no limited-slip additive or alternate fluid for either carrier. The phrase "LSD oil" does appear in the manual, but as an assembly lubricant applied to a bearing adjusting nut during a carrier rebuild, not as a fill spec. A-TRAC, which the manual describes as producing an "LSD (Limited Slip Differential) effect," is an electronic brake-based traction system with no fluid of its own.
Front differential: filler plug 39 N·m (29 ft-lb), drain plug 65 N·m (48 ft-lb). Rear differential: filler and drain plugs both 49 N·m (36 ft-lb). Transfer case: filler and drain plugs both 37 N·m (27 ft-lb). Every one of them gets a new gasket.
