And the 2022+ Tundra changed the rules again: its transfer case is ATF-filled (about 2.2 quarts) — gear oil doesn't belong in it at all.
Toyota's factory schedule mostly says "inspect" under severe service — which leaves owners guessing. Our recommendation from the trucks we work on: change transfer case fluid every 30,000 miles if you tow, run larger tires, see off-road or Midwest-winter duty, or run a tuned or supercharged truck. It's one to two quarts of cheap insurance for a case that gets no other protection.

It depends on the year, and this is the most common mistake owners make. 2005–2009 4.0L V6 and 2010–2012 5.7L V8 Tundras use 75W-85 gear oil, where a GL-5 synthetic like AMSOIL Severe Gear is a direct fit (other early configurations: check your exact year in the AMSOIL Garage). 2013–2021 Tundras specify Toyota's own 75W transfer gear oil — a distinctly lighter spec — and Tuned Yota's own AMSOIL fitment guide deliberately lists no substitute for those years: use the Toyota fluid. The 2022+ Tundra transfer case takes automatic transmission fluid (about 2.2 quarts), not gear oil at all.
