Where owners go wrong
Fill quantity is not one number either. Part-time and full-time 4WD versions of the same truck can take different amounts, so fill to the level plug per the factory procedure rather than counting quarts.
OEM vs aftermarket synthetic — the honest answer
- Where AMSOIL lists a product for your case (the 75W-90 rows above): a quality 100% synthetic GL-5 gear lube is a reasonable upgrade for towing, larger tires, off-road and winter duty.
- Where AMSOIL lists no match (2016+ Tacoma, 2010+ 4Runner and others): use the Toyota fluid your manual calls for. We do not recommend substituting a viscosity on our own authority.
- Transfer case vs differentials: one order of gear oil does not cover all three. Check each position for your exact year.
How often should you change it?
Toyota's factory schedule mostly says "inspect" under severe service — which leaves owners guessing. Our recommendation from the trucks we work on: change transfer case fluid every 30,000 miles if you tow, run larger tires, see off-road or Midwest-winter duty, or run a tuned or supercharged truck. It's one to two quarts of cheap insurance for a case that gets no other protection.

AMSOIL's own vehicle lookup lists 75W-90 gear lube for older Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, 4Runner, Lexus GX and LX570 transfer cases, ATF for the 2022+ Tundra and 2023+ Sequoia, and no product at all for the 2016+ Tacoma and 2010+ 4Runner, where Toyota's own fluid is the answer. Confirm against your owner's manual.
