Service Guide · Toyota Tacoma 2005–2015 · 4.0L V6 (1GR-FE) and 2.7L (2TR-FE)

2005-2015 Tacoma Oil Capacity (4.0L and 2.7L, 5.5 qt) and Oil and Filter Change

A 2005–2015 Tacoma takes 5.5 US quarts with the filter on both the 4.0L V6 and the 2.7L four-cylinder. The grade is where people go wrong: Toyota's manual for the 4.0L calls SAE 5W-30 the best choice, not 0W-20, while the 2012 manual for the 2.7L lists SAE 0W-20. Both engines use a spin-on filter. Every figure below is quoted from the Toyota repair manual.

Quick safety check before you begin. Required: safety glasses, gloves, and the truck level on a lift or on jack stands with the wheels chocked. Recommended: a drain pan and a torque wrench. Toyota's own caution on this job: used engine oil removes the natural oils from skin and contains contaminants, so wear gloves that oil cannot penetrate and wash with soap and water, never solvents.

The numbers

4.0L oil gradeSAE 5W-30, API SL Energy-Conserving or ILSAC multigrade. Toyota allows SAE 10W-30 if 5W-30 is not available, but says to replace it with 5W-30 at the next change.
2.7L oil gradeSAE 0W-20 synthetic. Toyota allows SAE 5W-20 if 0W-20 is not available, but says to replace it with 0W-20 at the next change.
4.0L capacity5.5 US qt (5.2 L) with the filter; 5.2 qt (4.9 L) without a filter change
2.7L capacity5.5 US qt (5.2 L) with the filter; 6.0 qt (5.7 L) dry fill

Level checkWarm the engine, stop it, wait a few minutes, then read the dipstick between the low and full marks

Step by step

  1. Get the truck level and open the underside

Park level, on a lift or on jack stands with the wheels chocked. Remove any under cover that blocks the pan or the filter.

  2. Drain the pan

Remove the oil filler cap first so the pan drains freely. Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the oil. Install a NEW gasket. On the 4.0L, torque the plug to 40 N·m (30 ft-lb).

  3. Change the filter

Use SST 09228-07501 to remove the filter. Clean the sealing face. Wet the new filter's gasket with oil and spin it on by hand until it seats, then give it 3/4 of a turn (or 13 N·m, 10 ft-lb, on the 2.7L if a torque wrench fits).

  4. Fill short, then set the level

Add about 5 quarts rather than the full 5.5, then check. Start the engine, look for leaks at the plug and the filter, stop it, wait a few minutes and read the dipstick. The level belongs between the low and full marks. Top up in small amounts. Do not go above full.

  5. Close up

Refit any under cover and reset the maintenance reminder if the truck has one.

Questions owners ask

5.5 US quarts (5.2 L) with the filter on both the 4.0L V6 and the 2.7L four-cylinder. Order 6 quarts for a filter change.

Toyota's repair manual for the 4.0L calls SAE 5W-30 the best choice, with SAE 10W-30 as the fallback if 5W-30 is not available. The 2005 and 2014 manuals agree on this. The 0W-20 you see on newer Tacomas is a different engine and generation.

The 2012 Toyota manual lists SAE 0W-20 synthetic, with SAE 5W-20 as the fallback until the next change. We did not check other model years of the 2.7L, so confirm on the filler cap or in your owner's manual if your truck is older.

40 N·m, which is 30 ft-lb, with a new gasket every time. The 2005 and 2014 manuals agree.

Yes: 5.5 quarts with a new filter and 5.2 quarts without. Change the filter every time, so plan on 5.5.

More for the Tacoma

Figures are quoted from Toyota repair manuals: the 2005 and 2014 Tacoma manuals for the 4.0L V6 (1GR-FE), and the 2012 manual for the 2.7L (2TR-FE). Other model years are not separately verified. Toyota's manual gives two different without-filter figures for the 2.7L, so we publish only the with-filter capacity both pages agree on. Confirm the grade for your exact year and set the level on the dipstick. Filter fitment and AMSOIL's coverage of this application are AMSOIL's published claim.
